Emogene Johnson, 86, of Stone, Kentucky resided in Mesa, Arizona before her death and entered her new home in heaven on Sept 6, 2019. We grieve not having her with us here on earth, but know she is experiencing great joy in the presence of Jesus!
Emogene was formerly married to Robert Edwin Johnson who passed away in 2005. She leaves behind three children: her daughter, Cora Hendricks and husband Mike of Gilbert, Arizona and twin sons, Robert Johnson and wife Thao of Tempe, Arizona and James Johnson and his wife Adelma of Las Vegas, Nevada. Emogene also leaves behind 7 grandchildren: Steve, Sara, Emma, Kimmy, Bobby, Jeremy, Justin and one great grandchild Chloe. Emogene is the oldest of 5 siblings, leaving behind her sister Delores Kelly of Sarasota, Florida; two brothers: Harold Carter of Valdosta, Ga and Terry Carter and his wife Linda of Hahira, Georgia; and was preceded in death by her sister Agnes Francis of Stone, Ky.
Emogene was born on August 15, 1933 in Stone, Kentucky to Cora and Virgil Carter. She graduated from Belfry Highschool and worked various jobs involving inventory, bookkeeping and cashiering, helping provide for her younger siblings. She also volunteered for the United Service Organization (USO) where she was introduced to Robert Johnson of Columbus, Ohio, a Navy veteran. She and Bob married in 1956 at Stone Baptist Church where she attended regularly. They moved to Salisbury, Maryland near Emogene’s cousins where she gave birth to Cora in 1958. After becoming pregnant with twins a year later, she and Bob moved closer to family in Kentucky, building a home in the nearest city of Chesapeake, Ohio that bordered Huntington, WV where Bob got a job working with Ford Motor Company followed by a career with the Railroad. A co-worker introduced Bob and Emogene to Grace Gospel Church where they attended with their children for 12 years. Emogene taught beginner and primary children and was highly respected and loved by everyone. She ran a day care in her home to help put her own children through private Christian schools and college. She was always there for her family, and helping her sister raise her two boys. When her marriage ended, Emogene moved back to Stone, Ky for a short season before moving out to Arizona to live with her daughter, Cora. The following year she moved to Nevada near her son Jim and wife Adelma to help care for her grand-daughter Emma while they pursued full time careers. Emogene lived in Nevada for 30 years until relocating back to Arizona in 2016 near Cora and Bob and 5 of her grandchildren. Emogene has always been known to be loving, caring and kind to everyone. She was able to LIVE this way because of her faith in God. Her favorite Bible verse was John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son [Jesus], that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” Her greatest desire in life was to make sure her children and grandchildren knew that.
The words of a current song by Hillsong Worship shares adequately the heart of Emogene: “Everyone needs compassion, love that’s never failing, let mercy fall on me. Everyone needs forgiveness, the kindness of a Savior, the hope of nations. My Savior, He can move the mountains. My God is mighty to save. Forever, Author of Salvation, He rose and conquered the grave. So take me as You find me, all my fears and failures, fill my life again. I gave my life to follow, everything I believe in, now I surrender… Emogene is now in heaven with her Savior. “In His presence is fullness of joy. At His right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11
