Darrel was born in Ogden, UT on May 12, 1933 to William Ray and Goldie (Parker) Muir of Clinton, UT; he was the youngest of seven children. He attended Clinton Elementary and North Davis Junior High before graduating from Davis County High School in Kaysville, UT in 1951.
He was drafted into the army and served in Korea from 1953 to 1955. Upon his return he entered Weber College, later transferring to the University of Utah where he graduated in 1962 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering (Aeronautical Option). While at the U of U he met his future wife, Janice (Jan) King of Honolulu/Salt Lake City. They were married in 1959 and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. He and Jan were active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Darrel was employed by The Boeing Company as a Design Engineer working on the Minuteman and Saturn programs while living in South Dakota, Missouri, Louisiana, and Alabama. In 1966, he transferred to the Commercial Airplane Division in Everett, WA working on the 747 program until his retirement in 1990.
He enjoyed piloting private planes, golfing, working on cars, fishing/crabbing, and traveling, especially in his motor home with his sweetheart, Jan. He maintained residences in Everett, WA and Mesa, AZ.
Darrel was a bright spot in many lives and he was loved and admired by all. He made each person feel as if they were his best friend or favorite relative. "Uncle" Darrel, with his ever present smile and twinkling eyes, will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his sister, Maxine Van Rensselaer of La Habra, CA, cousins and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Jan Muir, brothers Nolan, Norman, and Howard of Clinton, UT and Kenneth of Salt Lake City, UT and sister, Helen Lowe of Hooper, UT.
Interment was at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 27th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Clinton North Stake Center, 1448 W 1800 N, Clinton, UT 84015.
