Born in Lynwood, California, September 22nd, 1967 to Gale and Margie Yates.
Retired as a Boatswain Mate Senior Chief, Christine served 22 years in the US Navy, joining in 1986. She retired in 2013, though she never really left the Navy. Christine’s unstoppable dedication touched the lives of fellow shipmates and veterans alike. Her leadership secured herself a spot in the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame, in 2022, and a Grand Marshal in the 2013 Phoenix Veterans Day Parade. Continuously assisting with Returning Warrior workshops, awarded as an honorary member of the Tuskegee Airmen, volunteering wherever she could to help out a fellow veteran, her dedication was humble and true. Christine played a vital role in ensuring the 6888 Battalion received the Congressional Gold Medal award, pushing all the way through the Senate. As reflected in her persistent efforts, this exemplifies her dedication, and advocacy to her commitments, never resting until the job is done. A testament to her tenacity and passion for justice.
Christine’s love extended beyond duty, embracing La Virgin De Guadalupe, and an immense love for Our Lady of Lourdes. A devout Catholic, her religious journey started at the beginning. Attending school at Christ the King and Seton Preparatory, Christine once contemplated a path different from her military career, considering life as a nun. She continued spreading the Good Lord’s word as a Religious Educator, at St Mary’s Parish in Chandler, Arizona. There, she educated hundreds of school age children, alongside her busy and full life.
Her personal education continued under the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, at Arizona State University. A proud Sun Devil alumni, she obtained a Bachelor’s degree for Broadcast Journalism. This led Christine to embark on a career at 3TV, contributing as a producer in the local news scene in Phoenix. Her journalism skills opened a door for her to be an Embedded Reporter aboard the carrier, John C. Stennis, where she was later published by Third Fleet. She was also an excellent editor for her children’s school papers, making sure all punctuations were in order, all i’s dotted, t’s crossed, and everything in its correct place. Thanks, Mom.
Christine’s journey encompassed a rich tapestry of experiences. She worked for the toy company, Hasbro, for a decade, stacking shelves with the newest gadgets and games. In tow, she volunteered for Toys 4 Tots, year after year, ensuring a happy holiday to those in need. She was also a compassionate lover of dogs, volunteering at local pet shelters, ensuring the animals felt cared for and not forgotten. Let’s not forget all those 5Ks she ran, with a purpose close to heart. Just to name a few, the Pat Tilman run, Warrior Dash, Mud Run, Navy Bay Bridge in Coronado, and, of course, Head for the Cure.
Alongside her vast list of skills, her role as the DJ aboard the USS McKee showcased her ability to bring a sense of familiarity and comfort to the fellow shipmates during their time away from loved ones, at sea. There she found love of her own, meeting her husband, Juan Martinez. The two shared a beautiful 34 years of marriage together, creating a loving family of their two children, Jennica and Cabriel Martinez.
Christine's life was a testament to her resilience, adaptability, and ability to find joy in every chapter. Her work ethic knew no boundaries, and she always found time to help a comrade. A selfless friend, Christine saw the positive in everyone and added humor to life with her playful pranks and warm eyes.
Christine’s passing on February 11th, 2024, a beautiful blue sky, Sunday morning, coinciding with the Feasting Day of Our Lady of Lourdes, adds a poignant and serene touch to her farewell. Surrounded by loved ones in the comfort of her own home, her transition reflects a peaceful and meaningful departure and return home.
May her memory live on in kindness and love for all.
