In June 1939, he graduated from Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama. In September, that year, he entered the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In the spring of 1941 he met Jean Goode, a senior at Tuscaloosa High School. Bill graduated from University of Alabama in 1943 and went straight into the Army and was commissioned as second lieutenant in July 1943. William E. Weeks and Gloria Jean Goode were married March 28, 1944 and had 641/2 years together until her passing in October 2008.
Bill served in the Philippines during World War II and mustered out of service in 1946. In 1947, Bill and Jean moved to Orlando, FL. He started teaching at Orlando Senior High School in August 1947. He decided that education was to be his career and went back and forth between Orlando and the University of Florida, earning a Masters degree in 1951. In the summer of 1953, he finished all of the courses for a Doctors equivalence (a program they no longer have) at the University of Florida.
The next move in his career was becoming the assistant principal of Cocoa Junior-Senior High School in 1953. The next year he was tapped to go to Titusville High School and spent five years there. From Titusville High School, he opened Cambridge Elementary School in Cocoa, FL, 6/1/1959. In 1978 he was assigned Director of Maintenance. In December of 1979, he left maintenance and became principal of Audubon Elementary. In June of 1982, the new Superintendent wanted to charge principals and Bill chose to go back to Cambridge Elementary where he remained until he retired in August 1987.
Bill had a wonderful and sterling career in education. In October of 1953, Bill and Howard B. Jones founded the Brevard County Teacher’s Credit Union which is currently known as the Community Credit Union. He also served as president 1953-1954.
He is survived by his three sons: Brian (Paula), Warren (Debbie), and Randy; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
