Robert D. Adgate Jr.

Robert D Adgate Jr., 65, died peacefully in hospice care on April 16, 2012, after a brief but intense battle with lung cancer. He died surrounded by his loving family at the Hospice of the Comforter in Altamonte Springs FL. He is survived by his wife Sharon and father Robert D. Adgate Sr., with whom he shared a home in Merritt Island, FL; two sons Michael and Stephen of Marshall VA; daughter Chrys Pope of New Orleans, LA; sister Gloria A. Benns of Fort Pierce, FL; two daughters-in-law Tammy Adgate and Carla Adgate; and four granddaughters Josephine, Rebecca, Jennifer, and Carleigh; and several nephews and nieces. His mother Gloria B. Adgate passed away in 2004.

He will be dearly remembered and profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him as a caring and kind man, who gave unselfishly of himself to his family and his friends.

Bob spent the first half of his life in Bethesda MD, where he was an Eagle Scout. He was in the inaugural graduating class of Walt Whitman High School, where he was an All-Metropolitan running back for Whitman’s first football team. He attended Montgomery College, after which he became a business entrepreneur. He also served in the D. C. National Guard from 1967-1972. His first marriage to Kathleen Montgomery, mother of his two sons, ended in 1982.

Bob relocated to the Northern Virginia area in 1984, where he and Sharon started S&B Trucking and Supply Inc, followed by S&B RV Specialists. Son Mike worked in the family business for many years, and others in the family -- Tammy, Bob Sr., Steve and Chrys -- helped out as well. He and Sharon sold the business in 2005 and retired to Florida, settling first in Titusville and later moving to Merritt Island. On moving to Florida, Bob and Sharon convinced Bob Sr. to join them.

Bob found many ways to enjoy life and to contribute to the lives of others. He was a devoted family man and was especially dedicated to helping young people develop into strong adults. When his sons were young, he coached them in baseball; and when his granddaughters began to play sports, he became an avid fan, cheering them on from the sidelines. Bob truly enjoyed his retired life in Florida, spending time boating and fishing and with many new friends.

The family followed Bob's wish to be cremated and plans a Celebration of his Life, to be scheduled at a later date. Donations made to the Fauquier Falcon High School Booster Club, Attn: Softball and Soccer Programs at The Falcon Booster Club, Inc., P.O. Box 1166, Warrenton, VA 20188 would honor Bob as well as help his granddaughters.
