Richard James Betar, of Merritt Island, passed away on July 14, 2017, joining his late wife of 62 years, Greta. He was surrounded by his family, sons Mark (Janet) and Todd (Jeanne); grandchildren, Kyle and Mandy; great-granddaughter, Drea; and his sister-in-law Marlene (Donald) Smith.
Richard was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, January 5, 1935, served in the United States Marine Corp, completed an apprenticeship program at General Motor's Chevrolet Engine Plant in Flint, Michigan. After acquiring a B.S. Degree in Industrial Engineering from Temple University, Richard moved to Merritt Island, Florida in 1966 where he started his 30 year career at Kennedy Space Center working for Pan Am World Airways and United Technologies, USBI Chemical Systems Division. Upon retiring he attained a Florida General Contractor's License, where he started his independently owned Home and Building Inspection business, completing over 3,000 paid inspections. Richard enjoyed baseball, basketball, jet skiing, and playing with his Yorkshire dogs. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice of St. Frances.
