Marlene (Molly) Maguire Mitchum, 88, of Merritt Island, FL passed away on July 6, 2023. She was born in Decatur, Illinois to James and Mary Maguire. Marlene was one of 2 children (Michael H. Maguire) born to the Maguires. Her parents moved to Charleston, S.C. shortly after her birth and resided there until her marriage to Barney L. Mitchum Jr (August 21, 1955).. As a life long devoted Catholic, Marlene and Barney were married at Blessed Sacrament Church, Charleston, S.C.
From 1955 to 1959, Marlene worked as a Respiratory Therapist at the Medical University of S.C. Marlene and Barney were blessed with four children (Karen, Cynthia, Barney III, and Anthony). In 1964, Marlene and Barney moved to Merritt Island, FL as Barney entered NASA in its early stages. They became members of the Divine Mercy Catholic Church.
Marlene continued her education and graduated from Eastern Florida State College with an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1980. Marlene worked as a Registered Nurse at Wuesthoff Memorial Hospital from 1980 to 1997 and then retired.
Marlene was active in Bible Studies, W.I.N.G.S. Bereavement Group and the Divine Mercy Bereavement Ministry. She was also active in the community with the Sunflower House, Wuesthoff Retired Nurses Association and Alpha Nu Sorority Chapter 3398 (focus on St. Jude Hospital for Children).
Marlene was a direct descendant of the Princes of Fermanagh and Lords of Enniskillen (1204-1600 AD), Northern Ireland.
Marlene is proceeded in death by her husband, Barney L. Mitchum, Jr, her daughter, Cynthia Mitchum and son, Barney L. Mitchum III. She is survived by her brother, Michael H. Maguire (Lorraine Maguire), daughter, Karen A. Mitchum (Deborah Miller, MD) and son, Anthony J. Mitchum, granddaughter, Rachel E. Hunzeker (Benjamin Hunzeker) and great grandchildren, Rose, and Dean Hunzeker.
Visitation will be at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Merritt Island, Florida from 1:30pm to 2pm July 18, 2023. The funeral service will commence immediately after the visitation at 2pm. Marlene will be buried at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge, FL.
