Jean was born in Yonkers, NY and came to Brevard County in 1960.
“She Played A Good Game”
Jean was a class officer in Jr. and Sr. high school, and a WAVE during WWII. She received a Bachelors Degree from NYU and a Masters Degree from the University of London, England. She was a School Teacher who taught first and fourth grade. Jean had worked with the Brownies and Girl Scouts. She also wrote the child’s “ABC’s of Space” book. She was an Originator and Board Member of the Brevard Museum of Natural Science and History, on the Board of the Community Woman’s Club of Cocoa and the Board for the Merritt Island Public Library. Jean was the Historical Commissioner for District 2 and spent many years in the Children’s Section of the Central Brevard library with Mr. Bear.
She was a Wife to John G Mitchell who preceded her in death; Mother to Janis Gower and her husband Dennis; Nana to Jonathan Gower, Joanna Shotts and her husband Gary; Great Nana to Khloe Jean Shotts.
A Memorial Service for Jean will be held at 3:00 PM Monday December 9, 2013 at Derby Street Chapel, in Cocoa Village. Interment will take place at Florida National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the SPCA, the Central Brevard Library, or to Vitas Hospice.
