Dave “Top” will be greatly missed by his devoted wife Sharon, of 54 years.
Also, his 2 loving children, Melissa (Jason), of M.I. & David Jr. (Kris), of Viera, FL. Beloved Grandpa to his grandchildren, twins, Christopher & Daniella, Alessia, and Owen Colwell. He is also survived by his sister, Marguerite McLain of Seville, Fl, and his brother, James Beers (Phyllis) of Mt. Olive, N.C. As well as his 28 loving nieces and nephews and many extended family & friends. He was preceded in death by his loving parents Robert and Delores Beers of Crescent City, Florida, his brother-in-law, Jim McLain & nephew, Robbie. Luv. MgGySgt Beers was born on October 3, 1949 in Shippenville, Pennsylvania. He was an unwavering Patriot & couldn’t wait to serve his country. Because he was too young to join on his own, he had to have his parents’ permission & their signatures to join the USMC. He proudly served his country as a Marine for 23 years, beginning boot camp on June 23, 1967 @ the tender age of 17. He was a combat Vietnam vet as a helicopter gunner from 1969-70 in Danang & Marble Mountain. He had several different Duty Stations & was most proud of being a Drill Instructor in San Diego at MCRD for 2 yrs.
He was then promoted to Master Drill Sergeant in charge of several different platoons. He was promoted to E-9 early in his career, due to his hard work & dedication. He was stationed in Memphis, Tennessee, Santa Ana, & San Diego, CA & Norfolk, VA, Okinawa and Iwakuni, Japan (which was without his family)and Honolulu, HI, which was his and his family’s favorite of all his duty stations. They lived happily on Oahu for 3 amazing years.
Upon his retirement, June 30, 1990, from NAVMASSO in Norfolk, VA, he then became a Bailiff for the Brevard County Sheriffs Office in FL. He then became an Instructor at the Florida Air Academy, in Melbourne, FL, for two years before finding his second career.
He found the job that was the closest to his heart, when he became an instructor of the USMC JROTC program at Palm Bay High School in P.B., FL. During his 13 years there, in addition to leading the female rifle team to multiple State and National championships, he also did color guards with his students at multiple organizations and events. He was highly regarded by the many students who lives he touched. Some who continued to keep up with him regularly long after he retired. His life was dedicated to God, his family and the Corps. He enjoyed different activities including bowling, golfing and attending NASCAR races in Daytona and Sebring with his brother-in-law Dan. For arrangement info see www.wyliebaxleymerrittisland.com
