Carol Harvey

Carol Johnson Harvey, 86, died on Sunday in Melbourne, Florida. She was a long-time Lubbock resident who returned to her home state of Florida as a widow in 2004. During World War II she met and married Clark Harvey, a Navy pilot who was in military train-ing at Banana River Naval Air Station in Florida. They were married at First Baptist Church in Cocoa, Florida where Carol and her family were active members.

Carol moved to her husband’s home state of Texas where they raised five children – Sharyn of Melbourne; Randy (deceased), Mona of Houston, Texas; Ray and his wife Dora of Destrehan, Louisiana; and Richard and his wife Sherri of Wichita Falls, Texas.

Carol began her college studies at Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University) in Tallahassee and received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in elementary education from Texas Tech University. She taught 12 years at Bayless Elementary.

Carol traveled extensively with her husband who was a Texas Tech University agronomy professor. They lived a few years in Niger and Egypt while he conducted re-search. In later years, they traveled to most of the major countries in the world.

In their retirement, they sang in the King’s Choir at Highland Baptist Church where they were active members. Carol was the lead soprano in The King’s Trio, a ladies’ group which performed at Glorieta, N.M., and in civic clubs and nursing homes.

The third child of seven born to Walter and Ruth Johnson in Cocoa, Florida, she is predeceased by siblings Pearl Mildred Johnson, Ruth Roesler, Esther Burton, and Walter (Bud) Johnson, Jr. In addition to her children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Carol is survived by sisters, Ida Wright of Cocoa and Audrey Black of Palm Bay. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Annette Johnson of Rockledge, Florida, Freda Shuttlesworth of Amarillo, Fredda Harvey of Cedar Hill, and brother-in-law Roger Harvey of Amarillo, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday at Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel with burial to follow in Resthaven Cemetery. Dr. Stan Blevins, pastor emeritus of Highland Baptist Church, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or to Highland Baptist Church.
