Graveside services for Mr. Walter Frank Griffin Sr. will be held Friday at 11 am in Magnolia Cemetery. Rev. Jeff Walker of Grace Baptist Church of Brandon will be officiating. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Griffin, 92, of Marion, passed away at his residence on Tuesday. He was a retired Chief Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, serving his country during World War II and Viet Nam for a total of 28 years. Mr. Griffin received numerous letters of commendation and award ribbons during his service. Upon retiring from the military, he continued to serve his country as an Air Traffic Controller for the Federal Aviation Administration where he also retired with a total of 48 years in government service. He received a personal letter from President George H. Bush, commending him on his government service. Mr. Griffin’s greatest love was Jesus, living his life and walking daily according to the word of God. He enjoyed reading and studying along with teaching others about the Bible. He was truly a Bible scholar.
He is survived by his daughters Jenny Griffin of Brandon, Lillian Griffin of Marion; granddaughter Leighann Gonzalez of Biloxi and his “adopted daughter” and beloved caregiver Joann Wilkins of DeKalb.
Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his wife Jeanette, of which he was married 62 years at her death. He was also preceded in death by his son Walter F. Griffin Jr.; parents Irvin and Ruth Griffin; brother Herman Griffin and sisters Patty McPherson and Maurice Clime.
