Funeral services for Lucy Alford Hull will be held Friday, February 27th, 2015 at 11:00 am at New Hope United Methodist Church, DeKalb Circuit, with Brother Clay Farr, Dr. Owen Gordon and Brother Joe Landrum officiating. Burial will follow in the New Hope Church Cemetery with Stephens Funeral Home of Meridian, MS in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Hull, 59, of DeKalb, MS passed away Monday, February 23rd, 2015 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama after a valiant three year battle with colon cancer.
Lucy was born June 15th, 1955 in Magnolia, MS. Her parents were Luke & Grace Alford. Lucy graduated high school from Saint Mary of the Pine Catholic School Chatawa, MS. After graduating from Southwest Community College at Summit, MS, she then attended Mississippi University for Women where she graduated with a degree in Finance and Banking and a Master’s Degree in Education. Lucy began her teaching career at Parklane Academy in McComb, MS. After marrying the “Love of her life”, Dewayne Hull and relocating to the East Mississippi area, she taught at Lamar High School in Meridian, MS, Kemper Academy in DeKalb, MS and East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) in Scooba, MS, where she taught the last 25 years of her academic career. While at EMCC she taught Economics, Government and a Leadership Class. She was Sponsor of the EMCC Yearbook, “The Lion” for several years, while winning the top yearbook award in the State twice. She was also the Sponsor of the Honor Society “Phi Theta Kappa” where several of her students won numerous State and National awards. Lucy loved the classroom and all of her students. Anyone that took Mrs. Hull’s class not only came away well educated in the subject matter, but also with a deep respect and admiration for Mrs. Hull.
Lucy was also an active member of numerous professional and civic organizations. Lucy was also a former Miss Hospitality of Pike County, Mississippi.
Lucy loved to read and had a very large book collection. Being a devout Christian, she especially loved to read and study the Bible. Her collections of Bibles is numerous and include many different versions. She had a hunger for God’s Word and guidance. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Magnolia, MS and currently a member of New Hope United Methodist Church – DeKalb, MS in Kemper County.
Lucy is preceded in death by son Jonathan Luke Hull, and parents Luke and Grace Alford.
Lucy is survived by her husband of 29 years, Dewayne Hull, brothers George Alford and Howard Alford, nieces Sheila McKie (Ed) and Christy Simmons (Ashley), great nephew Hoover McKie and mother in law Webby Lois Hull, aunt Hilda Ray Alford and cousins Rick Alford and Shirley Hasselle.
Pallbearers will be Gene Jay, Mike Hull, Phil Hull, Hoover McKie, Larry Gibson and Bob Yelverton. Honorary pallbearers will be all members of New Hope United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to New Hope United Methodist Church – DeKalb Circuit or to the EMCC Foundation, P.O. Box 158, Scooba, MS 39358, attention Lucy Hull Scholarship Fund.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5pm to 7pm at Stephens Funeral Home of DeKalb and one hour prior to service time on Friday at New Hope United Methodist Church.
