Rex Freeman was born to the late Gene and Cash Freeman on February 6, 1927 in Merced, CA. He grew up in Merced and after graduating from high school in 1945, joined the Army Airforce. He was stationed in the Philippines where he serviced aircraft. When he returned to Merced, he worked with his father selling cars at Freeman Auto Sales. Later he became the owner of
Freeman and Sons Body Shop with his brother Jim and his brother-in-law Lem Mathis.
Rex had many hobbies and interests during his long life. When he became interested in archery, he learned to make his own bow and arrows. Every summer he took the family on a camping trip to Herring Creek to hike and fish.
He enjoyed planting a vegetable garden every summer. He especially enjoyed eating the tomatoes that he had grown. He enjoyed playing the organ at home and having his family sing along. After retirement he became
interested in woodworking and upholstery. Rex also owned many classic cars that he enjoyed restoring and taking to shows and outings with his family. He was active in the Valley Vintage Car Club and the Lincoln Continental Car
Club. He was also a long time member of the Elks where he was the organist. Rex was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir and attending bible studies.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Willis and Jim; his sister Betty Jo Mathis; his daughter Donna Freeman and his son Jay Freeman. He is survived by his spouse of 62 years, Hilda Freeman; his daughters Margaret Sanchez and Laurie (Jeff) Banks of Merced; his son Sam Freeman of Santa Rosa; his grandchildren Renata, David, and Alycia Sanchez, Rex and Francesca Freeman; his great-grandsons Lucas and Dylan Feri; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church located at 899 Yosemite Parkway, Merced, CA on Saturday, February 5th at 11:00 a.m.
