It is with immense sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband and Father, Reginald Devan Campbell Sr. on March 26, 2024. Big Reggie’s biggest accomplishment was his devotion to his wife (Karen Campbell) of 45 years, and his children (Reginald D. Campbell Jr. and Devontre Chrishun Campbell). He was a devoted Baptist and truly believed in the beauty and grace of knowing and walking beside the Lord. Big Reggie believed we should take shelter in God’s protection and lean on him during our toughest times. Further, it was his life’s work to have this undeniable belief for the Lord. Big Reggie was a consistent fixture in the lives of his family, and he will be greatly missed by many.
Reginald was born on February 27, 1957 in Saint Louis, Missouri to James Campbell and Willie Amanda Campbell (Reed). He was preceded in death by both his Parents, James and Willie Campbell (Alabama), His Daughter, LaTasha Campbell (Los Angeles); Brothers, Wayne Campbell (Los Angeles), James Jr. Campbell (Germany), Don Campbell (Los Angeles); and Sisters, Shiela Campbell (Los Angeles), Joan Campbell (Los Angeles); and Brother-in-law Tiger Jones (Los Angeles).
He is survived by his wife of 45 years Karen Campbell (Merced); his two Sons, Reginald D. Campbell Jr. (Rebecca Campbell, Merced) and Devontre Chrishun Campbell (Merced); Daughter, Amanda Campbell (Los Angeles); his two Grandchildren, Edward Morse (Los Angeles) and Ameera Campbell (Merced); Brother, Virgil Campbell (Los Angeles); his Mother-in-law Christein Whisenant (Los Angeles); Brother-in-law Mitchell Johnson (Los Angeles) and Michael Holmes (Linda Holmes, Los Angeles); Sister-in-law Loretta Lipps (Larry Lipps, Los Angeles), Patricia Jones (Los Angeles); and many Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and Friends.
Big Reggie worked as an MC for many years in Los Angeles at the Hobart Club, and was famously known in the city as “Sex Shooter.” He loved Football (Green Bay Packers), Basketball (Los Angeles Lakers), Baseball (L.A. Dodgers), golf, fishing, and enjoyed spending time at the racetrack or casino, doing what he liked to do most-gamble! He had a hefty appetite and could never turn down a good soul food meal cooked by his devoted wife Karen. Anyone who knew him knows at any given time you would have found him with a “scratcher” just chillin’ in the garage or in front of the TV watching any of his favorite teams, golf or old western movies. Big Reggie was a religious man and a follower of Christ. He felt at home when he was at the Friendship Baptist Church in Merced, and with Pastor Dr. Craig E. White (Atlanta).
“Do you have a ride?”
“Yes.”
“Tell him not to come.”
That was the start to “The greatest Love story ever told.” Before the couple knew it, it was September 16, 1989, and they were to become one at the Vermont Wedding Chapel in Los Angeles, California. Big Reggie and Karen would alter on move to Merced in 1996 where they would settle down and raise their children.
