February 17, 1930 - December 26, 2023
Phyllis passed away at the age of 93 on December 26, 2023 in Merced, California.
She was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 17, 1930. Not long after her family moved
to Jersey City, New Jersey. That is where she grew up with her sister Eileen. She went
to an all-girls Catholic High School and graduated in two years. After graduating she started working to help with her family.
She met the love of her life, Joseph Buckley, who she married after a very short courtship. Joe
was in the Air Force and along with their daughter Karen they traveled all over. They were stationed in New York, Massachusetts, Alaska (During the 1964 9.2 earthquake), Italy and finally ended up at Castle AFB in Atwater, California. Phyllis worked for Civil Service; in all the places they were stationed. She was Housing Manager out at Castle AFB until they closed and after many years finally retired. Phyllis met many friends along the way and her compassion for people was amazing. She just loved helping people.
Phyllis really enjoyed going to the bowling alley where her family and friends bowled. She would keep score for everybody and yell Whoop every time they would get a strike. Watching sports on TV was a great pass time, it didn't matter what kind of sports, she loved them all but her favorite was probably Golf. Her love for animals was so strong yet even funny at times. I remember her telling about the time she was taking her Drivers Test and saw a wounded bird in the road so she pulled over and picked it up. Surprisingly she passed the test. If there was a stray animal she would either pick them up or go door to door to help find the owner. Phyllis and Joe loved dogs and cats and had many of them in their lives.
Phyllis was known by her great grandchildren as GG and she loved being a grandma and great grandma. She is preceded in death by her husband Joe, Parents and sister Eileen. Phyllis is survived by her daughter Karen and husband Keith Hunter Jr. She leaves behind 3 grandsons Brian MacQueen, Michael MacQueen and wife Marcy, Keith Hunter III and wife Kellie. She also leaves behind 6 great grandchildren, Carter, Luke, Haley, Parker, Fisher Macqueen and Keith Hunter IV.
