Martin Thomas “Marty” Eger, passed away peacefully at his home in Merced, California, on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at the age of 58. He was born at Castle Air Force Base in Atwater, California October 27, 1964. He attended Merced City Schools, Merced High School Merced College and earned his Biology, BS Degree at Humboldt State University, Cal Poly Humboldt.
His interests were varied and multifaceted, as were the friendships he made over his lifetime. His jobs also reflected his many interests, starting with his love for music in retail sales at Record Rendezvous in downtown Merced at the age of 16. He took the knowledge of music very seriously, so he could better serve the customers he enjoyed helping. This all launched him into promoting concerts, confounding/producing the Godly records Label, writing music review columns for music magazines and papers, all of which gained him worldwide admiration in the San Francisco Bay Area Thrash Metal music scene. He worked at the Merced SunStar in the mailroom and Merced Color Press. After marrying and moving to San Francisco, he worked at the Record Vault. The Record Vault was the center hub of the 801’s metal music scene. He also worked both Spinelli Coffee Company and Peet’s Coffee shops as a Barista and learned coffee roasting at Peet’s East Bay Roasting Facility in Emeryville, California.
While at University, he became a Master Roaster for the Humboldt Bay Coffee Company in Eureka, California. After college in 2003, he found his way back to Merced to work and to care for his dearest mother. Here he worked as a substitute teacher in both the Merced City and High School District.
Marty was an international foodie and he enjoyed making many cultural. He became an avid connoisseur of all types of Asian cuisine and teas, which he shared in the company of his closest friends. He was a lifelong learner, loved research, and read about almost everything. He loved reading and watching Sci-Fi and horror films. His love for wildlife and the great outdoors came naturally by his father, Al. Spending time outdoors up in the Northern California Coast Redwoods and having a love for friends and critters, some of which were the same, gave Marty great joy. He was very kind and caring to all who knew him. He knew no stranger.
Marty is preceded in death by his loving father, Alvin Thomas “Al” Eger, lifelong friend William “Bill” Moldrup.
He is survived by his loving mother, Adeline Lorraine Eger of Merced; ex-wife Carrie Frye and many lifelong friends/honorary family; Tom Curry, Gary Causa, David Ryder, Tim Emerich, Erick Hannamen, Tom Hovie, Jim O’Toole, Eli Provisor, Gabe Watson and so so many more.
Martins generosity, thoughtfulness, kindness, friendship and deep conversations will be greatly missed.
