Luis “Louie” Ramirez Ortega, 85, of Merced, CA passed away on November 2, 2022 surrounded
by his immediate family.
Louie was born and raised in New Mexico, where he had several work trades, from being a
rancher and a sheep sheerer, waste management for the City of Alamogordo, to building adobe
homes from the ground up and served as a custodian for the school district in Carrizozo. He has
always been ambitious and worked hard his entire life. He was an amazing husband, to his wife
Dolores “Jerry” for 52 years, and a hero and dad to his children, Raymond and Stacy. He has
always been a great provider for his family. He moved to California in 1986 where he continued
to be a maintenance worker for several apartment complexes and later retired due to health
reasons. He resided in Merced, CA with his wife, and his daughter and son in law for the past
16 years.
Louie attended the Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM where he studied
accounting. Education was something he instilled in his children and grandchildren, and
encouraged young people to take advantage of getting an education. He was a dedicated
Pittsburg Steelers fan and remained faithful to his team til the end. He found so much pleasure
and happiness sharing old photos and old stories with his family and friends. He was a great
conversationalist and enjoyed listening to music and singing and we cannot forget watching old
John Wayne movies. He enjoyed spending time with his family and visiting casinos. Prior to him
becoming ill, he enjoyed the outdoors where he would go fishing and camping.
His death was preceded by his father Lonicio “Nicho”, his mother Susie, his sister Alice, brother
Jesse, and brother Peedy. He is survived by his wife Dolores “Jerry”, his children, son Raymond
and partner Dwight, and daughter Stacy and her husband Abel, his grandchildren, Christopher,
Ciera and her husband Raymond, Savannah and her fiancé Adrian, and Jewelicia, and his great
grandchildren Hazel and Elianna. He is also survived by his brother Charlie Ortega and his
family and sister Annie Escareno and her family, along with his younger sisters, Missy Hoffman,
Cheryl Ortega, and Sandra Ortega and their families. He has numerous nieces, nephews, and
cousins.
Although he will be greatly missed, his family stands on the promise, they will see him again.
They find peace knowing that he is well and made whole and according to God’s promises, he is
no longer suffering or in pain. He was always grateful to those who cared for him when he could
no longer care for himself. His wife, kids, son in law, and grandkids have no regrets and were
grateful for the opportunity to care for him as long as they did at home. As a family we celebrate
his life and the legacy he left behind.
