Jimmy was a native of the Bronx. He was a lifelong Yankees fan and loved everything about baseball. He joined the United States Navy during WWII and served on the USS Belle Isle. He was in the waters of Japan when the war ended. Serving in the Navy was his proudest accomplishment and the best time of his life. He wanted to serve during the war so badly that he lied about his age. He was only 15.
He moved to California in 1991 with his spouse, Geraldine, to be closer to her sister Dorothy, and family.
He became a Giants fan as well, since he was now a resident of California.
He enjoyed gardening in retirement and met every day with sit-ups, bicycling and pushups throughout most of his life.
He was the epitome of kindness, positivity and self-sufficiency. After the death of Geraldine, he lived independently until the age of 94. He then moved in with his niece and caregiver Linda, nephew, Troy and great-nephew, Brian.
He is survived by his sons, James and Louis Fermonte; his daughter, Lauren Fermonte Lang; his niece, Linda (Troy) Lindenberg and all who knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his son, Thomas Fermonte; father, Louis Fermonte; mother, Rose Ippilito; spouse, Mary Zagami; spouse, Geraldine Cameron; brother, Louis Fermonte, Jr. and sister-in-law, Dorothy Cameron.
He is greatly missed and will be remembered fondly.
There will be a graveside service with military honors on April 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Merced District Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements have been made through Stratford Evans Funeral Home of Merced.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Community Hospice of Modesto in memory of James Fermonte.
