After celebrating his 88th birthday at a family celebration on Sunday, Glen Thomas Maher passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, after a lingering illness. Born in Merced on July 13, 1927 to Thomas F. and Helen (Derby) Maher, he spent his entire life in Merced and was educated in the Merced schools. At the age of 17 years old, Tom joined the Navy and served overseas in Korea & China and was honorably discharged on August 4, 1946 as a quartermaster third class. With his GI bill in hand, he attended Fresno State University to study accounting. On December 29, 1950, Tom married his high school sweetheart, Iris Hightower. In December, they would have celebrated 65 years of marriage. As a career accountant, Tom started his own practice in the early 1960s, and later brought in a partner, Grey Roberts, forming Maher and Roberts, a Merced accounting firm. Tom will be remembered as an avid Merced Golf and Country Club golfer and former president of the board, a lifelong Catholic, and as a man truly devoted to his faith, family, and Irish heritage.
In addition to his loving wife, Iris, Tom is survived by his devoted children Diane (Steve) Graybehl, Porterville, Richard (Alberta) Maher, Merced, Jim (Rene) Maher, Pleasant Hill, and adoring grandchildren Brad Graybehl, San Francisco, Amy Graybehl, Porterville, Zack Maher, San Jose, Tara Maher, Tempe, AZ, and Nick Maher, Pleasant Hill. He is also survived by his niece, Sue (Don) Rose, Los Altos, and nephew, Dave (Lani) Hudgins, Merced. Preceding him in death were his sister, Karmel, and his grandson, Scott Thomas Graybehl.
Friends and family are invited to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 671 E. Yosemite Ave, Merced, on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 9:30am for the rosary and 10:00am for the funeral mass. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice.
