On the evening of Sunday, September 27th, Merced, California, Ethel Mae Allen went to sleep and woke up in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Visitation will on Friday, October 2, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. with a Celebration of Life following at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Temple Worship Center, 2740 State Highway 59, Merced, CA. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
Ethel was born in Columbus County, NC on February 9, 1928 to Susie and Asa Ward. Ethel, one of seven children, spent her childhood on the family farm. She would recount to her children how she appreciated loving parents and a simple life on the farm growing crops. Later in life Ethel met and married her loving husband, Eldon L. Allen, who was in the Air Force but always wanted to farm. With Ethel’s farming experience, and Eldon’s determination and both of their hard work, together they went into “vegetable sales” naming their farm “Allens Acres”. For over twenty years Ethel worked along side her husband. Ethel enjoyed cooking, and inviting her many children and grandchildren to enjoy home cooked southern food. Ethel excelled at sewing and made her six daughters beautiful dresses. Her son fondly remembers western shirts she sewed for his band. Ethel enjoyed flowers and had the most colorful flowerbeds. She later went into the floral creation business. Ethel taught her children the importance of attending church and staying close to God. She was a member of Christian Life Center and then Calvary Temple Worship Center, currently pastored by her youngest son, Rev. Robert Allen. Family was Ethel’s greatest joy. She generously gave her heart and energies to raising her eight children. Friends and family will remember her for her great sense of humor, contagious laugh, and kind hearted southern accent.
Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her loving husband Eldon L. Allen; two children, Linda Fowler and Kenneth Sewell. She is survived by her six children, Jean Scacco of Boise, ID, Dean Verrinder, of Merced, CA, Kathy Whitman of Pine Grove, CA, Shirley Dooros of Merced, CA, Carolyn Ensor of Liberty Lake, WA, and Robert Allen of Merced, CA; one brother, John Ward of Nakina, NC; 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Children’s Ministries of Calvary Temple Worship Center.
