January 11, 1989 – May 18, 2011
First and foremost, we all cherished every second of your life, and we all love and miss you greatly. This loss to our family is something all families should never have to go through. David’s untimely death comes as a tremendous blow to all who knew him. His 22 years of existence is not enough time to explore his limitless abilities, but his existence will last a lifetime in all the hearts to those who knew him.
David had a wonderful heart that was filled with love from all angles in his life. As a child he was always full of energy and had the best attitude towards life. His articulate mind desired knowledge and understanding of all things he wished to learn. He was an avid reader of many novels. As he grew older he came particularly fond of music; that is, music is was what drove him to play in the marching band in his junior high, and high school years. He was fortunate enough to take a trip to Hawaii with fellow band mates and escape the pressures of musical battles amongst fellow schools. As his talent became clearer he remined loyal to his marching band family post high school. He stayed committed to the arts of music and often times played music with his brother Adrian in the garage. The day his mother bought him his very own Pearl drum set was a dream appearing into reality. He once told a dear friend he would be content with starting and band and playing gigs at hole in the wall clubs. It was this attitude that clearly defined his genuine approach towards a meek life.
His personality was that of a comedic actor in a comedy script. His insightful humor only he could think of; often odd… is what made his charismatic approach towards a good laugh fun. His ability to remain loyal to his real friends is something out of a novel. He cherished all his closest friends and the cherished him, too.
Often times in life you hear the saying, “he was a good kid”, that is exactly what he was. He possessed a calm collective approach towards life and was never in any type of trouble. School was often a “simple task” for him as he put it.
David leaves a string of genuine family behind, his immediate family was made up of six siblings. He was the youngest of all of them. His mother is Camila Cortez, and his father Michael Cortez. His brothers are Michael A. Cortez, and Adrian A. Cortez. His sisters are Laura A. Cortez, Viviana M. Cortez, and Vicktoria L. Cortez. He also had a step father and step brother named Alfonso Alvarez and Alfonso Alvarez Jr. David was an uncle to three kids that he loved dearly and often spoiled. His nephews were Jason M. Wallace Cortez and Anthony J. Wallace Cortez. His niece was Shea E. Cortez. The oldest sister is to bare a new child relatively soon, and in honor of his passing the baby will be named David.
Furthermore, his family would like to thank all the people who helped raise the funds needed to make this tragedy into something miraculous. The donations that have been contributed thus far by all random persons of Merced County, and all the generous friends and family that are helping cover the costs on a life that had no price tag. This obstacle is definitely a hardship during times of mourning, but together we can return a son, a brother, and friend to the soil of life.
Ode to David:
“…sifting through sands, searching to
Surface the body which once stood, in loving
Memory is what we preach, a whirwind of
Uncertainty—it burns, the irresistible
Heartache starts to creep, the delicate
Heart reaches its final resting… this is
Where we part, in loving memory is what we
Speack… the lesson is learned” (Adrian A. Cortez).
We will never forget you brother, son, friend, nephew, cousin, uncle, and grandson.
