Darrell M. Larimer was born in Porterville, CA on July 5, 1930 to George M. and Anna May Larimer and passed away in Merced, CA on June 19, 2012 at the age of 81.
Darrell graduated from Merced High School in 1948. He then drafted into the U.S. Army on April 18, 1951 and was honorably discharged on April 17, 1953. After being drafted into the U.S. Army Darrell did basic training at Ft. Ord and then trained as a military policeman at Camp Roberts. Also while stationed at Camp Desert Rock in Nevada, in 1952 and 1953, he was involved in the 1st Atomic Bomb testing. He finished his Army career in Ft. Ord.
He then began a career with the Merced Irrigation District as an Office Engineer for 36 years and among his duties he was an official weather observer.
Darrell was a sports fan. He coached Little League, ladies fast pitch softball, and was a cub master. He also enjoyed being a part of his sons/grandsons car racing teams.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He faced everyday with a smile and a push to always do better. This is a man who loved his family and friends unconditionally. He will be truly missed by everyone he ever came into contact with.
Darrell is preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Estella Larimer; children, Scott (Pam) Larimer of Merced, Gary (Pam) Larimer of Merced, and Darylin Larimer of Tracy; grandchildren, Ryan Larimer (Stacey Marlow) of Merced, Alysun Larimer of Merced, and Garrett Larimer of Davis; great grandson, Aiden Joseph Larimer of Merced; and his traveling companions, Johnnie (Rosie) Rocha.
A memorial service will be held at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, 1490 B St., Merced, CA on Monday, June 25, 2012 at 11:00am.
