William Dillman “Bill” Steele, Air Force veteran, pillar of his Memphis community, and great family man, died Sunday July 5, 2015 at the age of 86. Since 1955, he lived in the same house in the Sea Isle community alongside his wife and best friend of 62 years, Lovely Ann Steele. Bill was a decorated Memphis police officer of 27 years. He was known to some friends and family as Bill and to others as Dillman. However, the most apt nickname for Bill was “The Good Fairy,” a title he earned for giving out candy regularly as well as too many $20 dollar bills to his children and grandkids, just because. Father to William Dillman Steele, Jr. and Sharon Ann Steele Hicks, Bill leaves behind Lovely Steele, Sharon Hicks, and his brother Hollis F. Steele. He also leaves behind grandchildren William, Ashley, and Abigail Hicks. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at Memphis Funeral Home. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. A service will follow at 10 a.m. He will be buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, on Poplar Avenue. Please send condolences to Ridgeway Baptist Church, where Bill served as deacon to the congregation and thrived in his faith.
