Walter was born on August 7, 1928 in Winston County, Mississippi to the late Walter H. and
Virginia Pearl Vowell Bennett.
He attended Zama High School where he graduated in 1947. Following high school, he attended Mississippi State University, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree of Education in Agricultural. He served in the Korean War as a sergeant in the Army from 1950-1952. Mr. Bennett retired from A.S. Barboro, Inc. after 40 years of employment. Mr. Bennett was an avid basketball fan and enjoyed watching Mississippi State and the University of Memphis play. He loved woodwork, building and painting bird houses, gardening, working crossword puzzles and playing cards. Mr. Bennett lived for his children, family and friends.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Sue Bennett, their three daughters: Lisa Hogue (Carl), Tara Marbury (Tommy) of Memphis, TN and Dana Gillespie of Deltona, FL. Seven grandchildren:
Carla Hogue, Eric Marbury, Kaley Pridmore (Ryan), Matthew Gillespie (Ashlyn), Allyssa Turpin (Nick), Kathryn Marbury and John Hogue. Also, five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and family from 9:00 am until 10:00 am on April 23, 2021 with service to follow at 10:00 am and at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project.
