Thomas E. Wyatt left his earthly home, Sunday, July 18, 2021. His loved ones would like to thank West Cancer Clinic and Methodist Hospital-Germantown for the fine care they took of him during his last illness.
Tom was born May 31, 1951 to proud parents Dr. George B. Wyatt and Margaret Giles Wyatt. He attended school in Jackson, TN graduating from Jackson High School. He attended college at the University of Tennessee – Martin and was a fervent fan of both Martin and Knoxville. He earned a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from what was Memphis State University where he was also a fervent fan. He was very proud of being a science nerd.
Tom spent most of his adult career working for Memphis Light Gas & Water in the Electrical division in several capacities over the years. He retired in 2005 after 25 years with the company. He leaves behind many friends from those years.
During his time with MLGW he also taught part-time at the University of Memphis. In 2007 he joined the Herff College of Engineering as an adjunct professor, teaching basic circuits and senior courses for soon-to-be engineers in ethics and professionalism.
Tom enjoyed mentoring and teaching his whole life. He loved the art of teaching and getting the best out of his employees and students. He still kept in touch with many of them as they started out their careers. In 2018, he was awarded the Herff Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award which he was very proud to receive. He retired again in 2019.
Music was always a large part of Tom’s life. He enjoyed all genres of music. He was a self-taught guitarist and played in a cover band with other MLGW employees for a number of years. He played guitar and was the lead singer. He sang briefly in the Memphis Men’s Chorus as well.
Tom was a member of Grace-St. Luke Episcopal Church for over 40 years. He served on the Vestry twice, and Vestry Secretary once. He served on several committees, was a lay reader and Eucharistic minister. He wrestled with the sound system for a very long time. He sang in the choir, where he met Janet, his wife of 33+ years.
He leaves behind his wife, Janet (Strang) Wyatt, his children, Thomas E. Wyatt, Jr. “Ted”, and Margaret E. Wyatt (Jon) and his favorite grandchild, Olivia Gooch. He also leaves his brother, George B. Wyatt Jr. of Jackson, TN and his sister, Margaret “Peggy” Wyatt Engman (Ned) of St. Louis, MO, and a host of friends and loved ones who he considered family.
A memorial service will be held Monday, July 26, 2021, at Grace-St. Luke Episcopal Church, 1720 Peabody Ave, Memphis, TN. The service is at 4:00 p.m. and visitation starting at 3:00 p.m. in Trezevant Hall. Masks are optional.
