Sue Elaine Yeager Whitt, born on July 18, 1943, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Davis Lloyd and Judy (Lain) Yeager, died in Memphis, Tennessee on November 11, 2023. Sue graduated from Garland High School in Garland Texas, where she excelled in Debate. She enrolled in North Texas University in Denton, Texas where she met her lifelong love Jerry Dean Whitt, who was an Assistant Professor of one of her classes. After Sue's graduation with a BS in Accounting, she and Jerry married on June 6, 1964, and moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where Sue received her Master’s and PhD in Accounting. She also received certification as a CPA and CMA.
Sue and Jerry and their two sons moved to Millsaps Tennessee where Jerry was the Dean of the Else School of Management at Millsaps College, and Sue was a Professor of Accounting. In her role as a CPA, Sue served on a national committee of the AICPA. The couple continued their teaching careers at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi and were members of Galloway United Methodist Church. Sue is a member of the Mississippi Methodist Conference.
After 25 years of teaching, Sue was awarded a master’s degree in divinity from the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. She became pastor to several Methodist churches in central and Northern Mississippi and the Jackson area. She also served as chaplain for retirement homes and hospitals, the Rehabilitation Center in Jackson, and read for the blind at NPR.
Sue and Jerry moved to Memphis in 2008 and joined St Luke’s United Methodist Church. They became residents of Town Village Audubon Park, where Sue continued to live after Jerry's death in 2021.
Sue is survived by two sons Kevin Douglas Whitt, of Alabaster, AL, and Jason Yeager Whitt of Memphis, Kevin's wife Marie Bishop Whitt; one granddaughter, Anne Marie Whitt; and four grandsons, Sam Yeager Whitt, Davis Henry Whitt, Calvin Spain Whitt, and August Miller Whitt, and their mothers, Lydia Rice, and Maureen Spain. Sue is survived by her sister, Kay Yeager Moran and by nieces Heather Biles, Caitlin Lobosco, and nephew Jim Moran and their spouses and children, nieces Kim Knollmeyer, Terry Peiffer, and nephew Steven Whitt and their spouses, children and mother, Judy Mckenna.
Sue will be remembered for her remarkable intelligence, love of family, compassionate service to others, and for her delightful ever-present sense of humor. Donations in Sue's memory should be given to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to any organization feeding the poor.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 10, at 2:00 PM, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
