Shani was a favorite professor of mine at the University of Iowa School of Social Work.  I took her Social Work and Racism course in 1984. I don't think I've forgotten a thing. She impacted how I practiced in my field. I have thought a lot about her over the years. Today, I took the time to Google her and was saddened to learn about her passing.  I would have loved to have talked to her again and share with her the all the things I did based on what she taught.

I may not know how you feel but I know what it feels like to lose your Mother, so it’s goes without saying, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Professor Shani was the first of my neighbors to welcome me to Dickinson Street when I bought my home here  in 2008. She was unfailingly kind to my mother and father who lived with me before they died. She always spoke of her great love for her family members. I extend my deepest condolences. --Lori Cohoon

Jabari, I thank God for your sacrifice for Shani. From the time you were a little boy, you were her “everything” …..she loved you most! Thank you for taking this picture for me. I will treasure it always.

I met Shani in the 80’s as a student at Iowa. My first impression as she strutted into class was, “this little lady has a lot to say”. 🥰. I was right and I soaked up everything she offered. I was also her intern when I got my master’s degree and it was Shani who taught me what it looked like to be an empathetic professional. She cared deeply…it was a wonderful thing to be cared for by Shani. 

Through the years we kept in touch through letters, Christmas cards and phone calls. I loved her dearly and came to Memphis twice to see her. On my last visit,  I bought her ribs because that sounded good to her and we told old stories and laughed hard. Shani’s laugh will always be one of my favorite sounds. 

I will miss you Shani..but I will always be grateful that your influence made me a better person.
