Ruth Hinton White

Ruth Hinton White, 77, went to be with Jesus in heaven on Thursday, May 12th, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. Born in Savannah , Tennessee; she leaves her husband Phil White of 48 years of marriage, and a son Byron White of Jasper, Tennessee. She graduated from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt, and she had an assistanceship at the University of Memphis while working on her Masters Degree. She served as secretary of the Business and Professional Women of Tennessee and also served on the board for the Tennessee Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She was a member of Holy Communion Episcopal Church.

She had a natural talent for tap dancing where she performed with several groups throughout the Memphis area. She and her husband enjoyed doing many activities together; playing tennis, tap dancing, roller skating, ice skating and competitive target shooting. They traveled throughout the country competing against adults of the same age and talents ice skating while still in their late fifties.

She enjoyed competitive target shooting and was a member of the Memphis Sport Shooting Association where she set two national records in pistol. She was a certified instructor in personal protection and home firearm safety.

She loved poetry and had the unique gift of writing beautiful traditional poems and Japanese Haiku poetry.

She was a very caring and compassionate person and will be thoroughly missed by her loving friends and family.

The family would like to thank Dr. William Walsh and her care giver Carol May for all the support and nurturing they offered during those difficult time.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Friday the twentieth of May at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Ave. Memphis TN 38119.

The cremated remains will be inurned at a later date in middle Tennessee. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family request charitable donation in Mrs. White’s name to be made to a charity of your choice.
