The life of Nancy McGlocklin Laycook will be celebrated this Sunday, November 16, 2014, at the Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN 38122. Visitation begins at 2:00 p.m. with a memorial service at 3:00 p.m., and reception following. Born Nancy Margaret McGlocklin on January 22, 1959, she was the only child of her loving parents, William and Louise McGlocklin. Nancy grew up in Memphis as a member of Union Avenue Baptist Church and attended St. Agnes Academy where she was a star tennis player and was active in many activities and social clubs. After high school, she studied business at the University of Memphis where she was a member of Pi Phi sorority and a Lambda Chi “Little Sister,” and worked part-time at Oak Hall. After college, she managed several upscale women’s clothing stores including the Georgetown Clothier in Washington, D.C. and Talbot’s in Memphis. Wanting to help others and looking for a life more fulfilled, she later transitioned to working for nonprofit organizations. At the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT), she helped those in need fundraise to be able to afford their medical care. After 10 years at NFT, she then accepted a position with the MS Society where she managed fundraising campaigns, including the very successful MS150 annual bike fundraiser until she had to resign as a result of cancer. Throughout her life, Nancy enjoyed a wonderful relationship with her family, friends and coworkers. She travelled extensively and also reveled in celebrating the holidays. Nancy loved to entertain and hosted many memorable events, including fundraisers. Nancy possessed a vibrant presence and a kind and abundantly generous spirit that was bigger than life. Her gifts were plentiful - loving others, her gift of friendship, her ability to uplift and minister to those in need, her ability to enjoy the life that God gave her including caring for the many dogs she had over the years, her ability to be grateful and to encourage others to maintain a spirit of gratefulness, making thoughtful and unexpected gestures of kindness, an infectious laugh and always, maintaining a strong faith. Nancy fiercely battled cancer for almost six years, requiring numerous surgeries and hospitalizations, chemo treatments and radiation, throughout which Nancy maintained an incredibly positive attitude and unwavering faith. Even immobile and homebound, she would still think about what plan God had for her and how she could help others. Her doctors told her she had outlived her expected life by years, no doubt a result of her faith and joie de’vivre. Nancy leaves behind her husband, Michael Laycook of Memphis, her mother-in-law, Mrs. Marion Laycook, her uncle, Colonel Elmer “Buddy” Follis, many loving cousins including Cindy Green of Virginia, Claudia Tyson of Jackson, TN, Debbie Follis of Memphis, and Denise Isaacs of Kingsport, TN, her stepdaughter, Alexandra Laycook McDaniel and husband Tyler McDaniel, stepson, Reed Laycook, sister and brother in-law Sheila and Richard Carman, nieces Kaylee Carman and Lindsey Scarborough, and many devoted friends who dearly love her. At the time of her death on November 11, 2014, she and Michael had just recently celebrated their eighth anniversary. They were the loves of each other’s lives.
