Martha McKenzie Carpenter, 88, of Memphis died Sunday, February 6, 2011 at Baptist Desoto Hospital. The family will receive friends at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 from 5-7 p.m. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 10 :00 am at Memphis Funeral Home. Interment will be Friday, February 11, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Mt Olivet Cemetery, McKenzie, TN. Mrs. Carpenter was a pilot during WWII in the WASP, Women’s Air Service Pilots, and later retired as a bookkeeper at Memphis Furniture Manufacturers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, George M. Carpenter, and two sons, Daniel Green, and John Green. She is survived by her three daughters, Martha (Roger) Murray of Jackson, Maine; Garland (Jackie) Davis of Nesbit, MS; and Meg Thomas of Memphis; 10 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. The family requests memorials be made to either Make-A-Foundation or to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
