Green Valley Baptist Church. August 28, 2014 at St. Peter’s Villa Signature Health Care, was called home. There was a great reunion in heaven when she joined her husband, Andrew Harold DeBerry, departed November 10, 1977, Gary, Indiana.
As a young girl she moved to Gary, IN with her older sisters. A graduate of Roosevelt High School, she worked various jobs until she began her career as a caregiver. In 1958 for nine dedicated years Marie worked for one family who remained close friends throughout her life. In Gary, IN, she joined Christian Valley Baptist Church, where she married her soul mate on July 17, 1966, 10 years later to suffer a great loss. The DeBerry family remained close and supportive over the years. Marie continued as an exceptional caregiver receiving many Merit Awards for service throughout her years at Lake County Convalescent Home, Crown Point, IN until her retirement.
As a devout Christian she joined Monument of Love Baptist Church family in Memphis, Tennessee, where she reunited with her sister Leola, nephew, Chris and niece, Gloria. A dynamic Godmother she was active and supportive until failing health demanded limitations.
At that time Marie was blessed with faithful caregivers in her niece and nephew along with their families throughout the last days of her life.
She leaves to mourn her passing, niece, Gloria Edmond (Marco Davis), nephew, Christopher Edmond (Gloria Boyce), grandnieces Tiara Davis, Nakiya Edmond, Kamiya Edmond, grandnephews, Merrick Boyce and Christopher Edmond Jr., three sisters, Leola Edmond (Clyde), Memphis, TN, Florence Freeman, Virginia Beach, VA, Melinda Spates, Gary, IN. One brother, John Spates, Gary, IN, her niece Johnny Mae Weatherspoon, Virginia Beach, VA, who is like a sister and many other nieces, nephews, grand and great grand nieces, nephews and friends that will miss her.
Preceeded in death by parents, husband, and 3 sisters; Francis Marie Spates, Louise Spates-Otterbridge and Susie Spates-Love. 8 brothers; Henry Spates, Harry Spates, Marshall Spates, Melvin Spates Jr., Julius Spates, Rolland Spates, James Spates and William Spates.
