Malcolm Richardson Gross, 88, of Memphis Tennessee passed away May 6, 2024, having lived a long and wonderful life. Malcolm was deeply loved by our family and so many friends and will be dearly missed.
Malcolm was born on April 18, 1936, to Emma (Richardson) and Albert Gross and grew up in the Little Flower neighborhood of Memphis. Malcolm attended Christian Brothers High School in Memphis and began college at the University of Tennessee where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He graduated from the University of Memphis with a Bachelor of Science in Business and Accounting and served in the U.S. Army from January 1957 to December 1958, stationed in Germany.
He worked in the Investment Bond Industry with various banks and finished his career with E.F. Hutton. For the second phase of his life, he worked and owned several small businesses, but his favorite role at the time was helping care for his first grandchild, Kirby Gross Abner.
Malcolm, fondly known as Uncle Chubby, DD, Big Daddy, Bumpers, or to most people, “Chubby”, was a fun, loving, and larger-than-life person. He loved to give financial advice and life lessons to his children and grandchildren. He was a wonderful listener and many friends and family enjoyed “bouncing off ideas” to Malcolm as they were always met with entertaining stories mixed in with sound strategies.
One of his greatest passions was spending time with his family. There were many trips to Pickwick Lake at the family cabin, to Club Med resorts around the world, and to the sunny beaches of Florida.
Malcolm is survived by his children, Charles Staples (Karin), Allison Laymon (Michael), Julie Keeley (Chris), and Albert (Bert) Gross (Cydney). He is also survived by his brother, Albert Gross (Patsy) his sister-in-law, Margaret Miller, and his grandchildren, Kirby Abner, Emma Laymon, Sara Zoe Laymon, Kaia Keeley, Cole Keeley, and many wonderful cousins, nieces, and nephews. Malcolm was predeceased by his wife Zoe Harrison Gross, and his brother Jack Gross.
There will be a memorial service at the Germantown United Methodist Church Chapel, 2331 S. Germantown Rd., Germantown, TN 38138 on Monday, May 20th at 2:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life at the West Rock Condominiums Clubhouse, 1880 Martin Grove Ln., Germantown, TN 38138, immediately following the service.
