Dr. Lynn W Conrad, 73, of Memphis, TN passed away on December 30th, 2016 at Methodist Hospital Germantown after a short unexpected illness. Dr. Conrad was born July 27th, 1943 in Memphis. His love for his family cloaked all that he did, never far from his thoughts. In the City of Memphis where everyone is one relationship removed, one could not have a conversation with him about someone that did not lead back to a story involving time with one of his children and their friends. The birth of his grandchildren would lead to a quick trip to welcome them to the family and capture a file full of photos to be shared.
Known simply as Conrad to everyone who knew him, he had three great loves: Love for his children, Love for the healing of others and Love for the adventures that life on this earth had to offer.
He graduated from Central High School and from Southwestern (now Rhodes College), and then earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee, College of Health Sciences. He pursued postgraduate training at the City of Memphis Hospital and served his surgery residency at Methodist Hospital Memphis. He completed his Urology residency at the City of Memphis Hospital. He was a professor of Urology at the University of Tennessee, certified by the American Board of Urology and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His private practice began in 1977. Since 1996 he has served the urology needs of tens of thousands of Mid-Southerners as a partner with the Conrad Pearson Clinic.
In the halls of The Conrad Pearson Clinic and the Memphis hospitals, he was well known for the afterhours care for those in critical need. His family and friends were no strangers to delayed or canceled time with him because of a call to surgery. The offer of his cell phone to his patients was the rule not the exception.
Conrad loved Memphis and called it home, but when not enjoying his family or caring for his patients, he would be off on another one of his adventures. The adventure might simply be the enjoyment of a long weekend to New York with his close friend Sherry White or it could be one of his many missionary trips to Cuba, but they always created a great story to be told. Conrad loved exploring the most extreme parts of the globe from his recent climb to the basecamp of Mount Everest to his preparation for his upcoming trip to Africa. In fact, it was this preparation for his next adventure that led to the illness that called him home to his God.
The family will hold a private burial service on Monday, January 2nd, 2017. The family invites his friends to join them in worship at Highpoint Memphis located at 6000 Briarcrest Ave following the burial. The service will be held at 1:00 with a Celebration of Life reception at The Fed Ex Event Center at Shelby Farms Park (next door to The Kitchen) immediately following.
Dr. Conrad is survived by his 5 children, 11 grandchildren: Melissa and Tom Grimes and their children, Ann & Betsy; Tate and Hilary Anne Conrad and their children Clemens and Bay; Jesse and Caroline Conrad and their children Pal & Abe; Lilian & Jay Schroder and their children Jack, Jane and Hewett; Emily and Cole Wise and their children McKinney and Boyd. He is also survived by his brother Edward J (Jerry) Conrad and his wife Annette of Atlanta and numerous nieces and nephews and his cousin Jim Hartley of Memphis. He is preceded in death by his parents Edward J Conrad Sr and Evelyn Rehman Conrad of Memphis.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be sent to Church Health (where he volunteered countless hours), St Jude Children’s Research Hospital (where he opened his home to international patients to live) or Children’s International Heart Foundation (where he was a founder and served on the Board).
