Our sister Linda Marie Hyatt passed away quietly, early on Monday morning, September 23, 2024. She was an important part of our lives because of the kindness and support that she shared many times with her family, as well as her old friends and new acquaintances.
Linda was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but was raised in Houston, Texas. Linda is the second of six sisters born to Lillian and Henry Hyatt. She was born two minutes after her twin sister. She was fond of telling everyone that she got tired of waiting and pushed her twin out because she was ready for life. At 22 years of age, Linda, her parents and her five siblings returned to Memphis where she lived for the remainder of her 76 years.
In her younger days she did enjoy traveling and had a desire for a taste of adventure. One trip she most enjoyed was a week-long cruise around parts of the New England coastline. Linda did not book a trip on a yacht with passenger service. Instead, she chose a three masted sailing ship on which she (and all the other passengers) served as members of the crew. Interesting enough the ship does not have the space to provide bathing facilities for anyone to go along with what in sailing terms is called "The Head" and available to everyone. This was definitely not a cruise for the faint of heart.
In her early twenties, she took train trips down to New Orleans with her twin sister. While in her twenties she bought her first car. She then extended her summer trips to the coast to other members of the family as well as members of her prayer group. She turned thirty the year of her third excursion with her twin. On this trip they were charmed by a portrait artist setup near the old French Square. This is where her pastel portrait was done.
Linda spent many years of her life working in Libraries. She loved them. She worked in the City of Memphis Public Library system and spent thirty years at The University of Memphis. Where her final position was that of a Reference Librarian in the university library's Government Documents department when she retired in 2019. While she was at The University, she took numerous classes in art and in history. She was a person with a lot of curiosity and a desire to add to her amazing depth of knowledge.
Linda leaves behind her twin and four younger sisters as well as two nephews, a niece, and four grandnieces. She also leaves behind many friends and so many wonderful memories.
A celebration of life for Linda will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN 38122.
