She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, John Sherman Mitchell, Jr., her brother, Percy Grantham, many other family members and a host of loving friends.
A native Memphian and a long time resident of Highland Heights, she attended Treadwell School and graduated from Tech High School. During World War II, she served her country as an employee of National Fireworks making tracer rounds for the Navy. She also worked for the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company for 24 years. She was a member of Holy Communion Episcopal Church since 1950. Lillian loved working with her flowers in her yard and was an avid fishing enthusiast.
She will be dearly missed by her three children, Barbara Stewart Daniels of Memphis, Robert Allen Stewart, Jr. of West Memphis, Arkansas, and John Cameron Mitchell of Memphis. She also leaves six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, three nephews and one niece.
A Memorial service will be held on 1 p.m., Monday, July 28 at Holy Communion Church. Burial to follow in National Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Memphis Funeral Home on Poplar Ave. In lieu of flowers, Lillian would have preferred memorial contributions to be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
