Kevin Michael Cowan passed away September 3, 2013 at his Collierville home. He was born May 12, 1948 in Elizabeth, NJ to Mary Lou and Joseph H. Cowan, deceased. Kevin graduated from The University of Georgia in 1970 as a member of the Delta Chapter of Sigma Chi. He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He completed flight training at Reese AFB in Lubbock, TX and then spent the next nine years as a B-52 pilot and aircraft commander serving at Griffiss AFB, Rome, NY, Anderson AFB, Guam, and Castle AFB, Atwater, CA. During his military career he flew 88 missions and was awarded five service medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross. Kevin obtained his MBA from Golden State University in 1978 and left the service as a USAF Captain when he was hired at Federal Express in 1979. He started his airline career in the Boeing 727 and later flew the Airbus 300 series, retiring in October 2011 with 32 years of service.
Kevin was married to Cathy Freeman Cowan, of Martin, TN, for 26 years. Between them they had four children; Mike (Jana), Matt (Joy) all of Germantown, TN; Mallory, a student at UT; and Shea, at MTSU. He was also survived by his sisters Kathy Brandt of Atlanta, GA and Kerry Heil of Strongsville,OH, as well as six grandchildren.
Kevin was a passionate golfer, and when he wasn’t playing golf he could be found watching golf on TV, chatting about golf at Memphis National Golf Club, or cheering his Georgia Bulldogs on to victory.
Visitation will be at Memphis Funeral Home on Saturday, September 7th from 3 - 6 PM. Burial will take place at the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at 1 PM September 9th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials be made to Memphis National Golf Club in his name.
