Mrs. Truitt was a light in my life.  I will never forget summer Spanish classes at her home or how she challenged me to use my learning as an adult.  She demanded that I be ready to use it daily- as I do now.

As my Homeroom Teacher during my junior year at the Cobra Den, Mrs. Truitt was firm and lovable, and spoke volumes for the inclusion of every student in the Homeroom, of getting involved in great activities that were offered at the Traditional Memphis George Washington Carver High School.   Her approach to patience and understanding to each Homeroom student created a second family for us all.  She was one of the best things that happened to us because having someone like her to teach and nurture us brought us to our best. The bond that she created was so electrifying that she asked the legendary Principal R. B. Thompson to allow her to keep our group intact as her Homeroom Students, for our senior year.  She kept the family together, for our senior year.    
     Mrs. Truitt comprised the Team that included Mr. Moses Gunn (RIP) as the Spanish Teachers.   Her classroom management and student engagement were essential skills in the evolving educational landscape of the 1960s.  As with her Homeroom Class, her important soft skills in the Spanish Classroom were leadership, strong work ethic, and marvelous inspiration that she conveyed to her students.  She was a phenomenal Spanish Teacher, and emphasized the basics, by constantly reminding his students to “Roll the R.”  The Schools’ Spanish Club was her outreach in getting upcoming students, from the 7th through the 9th grades to pursue the Spanish Curriculum.     Her manner was firm, but always friendly and inspirational.   When she knew a student could reach higher, she provided the push to take that student higher.  When she knew a student needed encouragement, her voice was the voice of encouragement.  Her gentle encouraging voice gave students the knowledge that dreams are not hard to follow.   
      She created a positive learning environment and motivated all of her Spanish Class Students to adhere to her teachings and to learn the language.    Mrs. Truitt expressed the "Sweet Voice of Spain".

I will cherish my fond memories of “my girl” Soror Juanita Truitt. Her presence was always apparent in whatever room she entered. She was both a scholar and a servant leader. “For if she’s been an AKA, life owes her naught she’s lived her day”🩷💚

To Eric and Kesha  Truitt  and family sorry to hear you lost your beautiful  “mother who kept things so “real” . Our prayers  are with you and your family !
