Joyce Marie Queen (90), lovingly known as Mimi by her family and close friends, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Friday morning, May 20, 2022. She was no doubt welcomed home in Heaven by all of those who came before her.
Mimi was an active member of Woodland Presbyterian Church, where she enjoyed her weekly Bible Study, as well as the Outreach Group who performed songs, shows, and skits for local assisted living and nursing homes in the area. Mimi’s greatest hobby was her ability to crochet – hats, afghans, scarves, and other patterns – a gift she shared with many people near and far. For several years, she crocheted a hat a day for an entire year to donate to MIFA (Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association). When 365 hats became too much, she continued to crochet at least 200 per year for many years as well. There is no telling how many hats are being worn by those in need throughout the city of Memphis and surrounding areas. It was her special gift to be able to lovingly share her hobby with those in need. Mimi was also an avid reader, enjoying all genres from romance to mystery. Her favorite show was Jeopardy and hardly missed an episode! When she wasn’t busy with her other activities, she enjoyed watching her great grandchildren play sports or hear about all their accomplishments over the phone when she couldn’t be there in person. She also loved to travel to visit her daughter Jane and Susan at their cabin to relax and be pampered.
In her working years, Mimi was an employee of MLGW for many years, followed by time at TVA, as well as several years with Will Griffin Attorneys', but probably her favorite job was her part time gig at Bogey’s Deli where she worked alongside her daughter Jane and some other friends.
Mimi is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Walter R. Queen. She is survived in death by her son, David Queen (Nancy), and daughter, Jane Queen (Susan); her grandchildren, Adam Queen (Jennifer), Tracy Shearin (Joe); and her great grandchildren, Jackson Queen, Juliana Queen, Joseph Queen, Mack Shearin and Mae Shearin. Her family was her greatest joy and blessing in her life, as was she to them.
We will celebrate her wonderful life on Friday at Woodland Presbyterian Church at 10:00 am with a reception and fellowship to follow in the parlor.
