The eldest daughter of the late Kenneth and Mary Tompkins, Joyce was a native Memphian and a graduate of Humes High School. She was a member of Leawood Baptist Church for over 40 years where she served faithfully as a volunteer in their nursery and Mission House. She retired from Memphis City Schools after working in the cafeteria at Grahamwood Elementary for many years. She enjoyed reading, writing, bowling, solving puzzles, listening to country and gospel music, and a good laugh. Most of all, she loved being with family.
Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband James Hodge and her parents Kenneth and Mary Tompkins. She is survived by her three daughters Tina Murphy (Greg), Lisa Hodge, and Jamie Hodge Perkins (Tommy); her two sisters Nina Tompkins and Barbara Moore (Jimmy); six grandchildren Crystal Murphy, Rachel Murphy, Julian Hawkins, Ethan Hawkins, Griffin Perkins, and Julia Perkins; and two great-grandchildren Bryce White and Bentley Murphy.
The memorial service will be held at Family Funeral Care at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, followed by a graveside service at Memphis Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
