Dr. Jerry L. Glisson, 94, a long time resident of Memphis went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 11, after a short illness. For the past year and a half he had resided at the Harris Grove Retirement Home in Whiteville, TN.
Dr. Glisson was a retired pastor of Leawood Baptist Church for almost 36 years. He was a graduate of Union University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. While at college and seminary he pastored churches and upon leaving seminary he wa called as pastor to the 1st Baptist Church of Huntingdon, TN. He was there from 1951 - 1956. He was then called to Leawood Baptist Church in Memphis..
In the past he has served as trustee of Union University and of the Southern Baptist Convention's Home Mission Board and Brotherhood Commission. He also served for a year as president of the Tennessee Baptist Convention. He was a great spiritual leader during the "Jesus Movement" of the 1970's. God used him and Leawood to touch the lives of many for Christ. "Dr. G" as some affectionately called him was known as a loving and caring pastor. He was a faithful and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen to whom he was married for 66 years and an infant daughter, Terry Jan. He is survived by his sons Rickey Glisson and Phil (Teresa) Glisson all of Memphis; daughter Lisa Garrett (Jimmy) of Bolivar, TN; grandchildren: Jeremy Glisson and Misty Smith of Jackson, MS, Linda Wingo of Memphis, Andrew Glisson of Houston, TX, Jonathan Glisson of Millington, TN, Amber Carroll of Nashville, TN and Daniel Garrett of Bolivar, TN; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive guests on Friday, July 14, from five o'clock until eight o'clock in the evening and funeral services will be on Saturday, July 15, beginning at ten o'clock in the morning all to be held at Leawood Baptist Church, 3638 Macon Road, Memphis, TN 38122. In lieu of flowers memorials in Dr. Glisson's honor may be offered to the Leawood Baptist Church Roof Repair Fund. Online condolences may be sent to the family through www.memphisfuneralhome.net.
