Jean was born on June 18, 1935 in Greenwood, Mississippi the first of two daughters born to the late Charles & Catherine Carroll. She graduated from Greenwood High School and then attended the Mississippi College for Women.
After college she moved to Memphis where she met Laurens Robert Massey in the back of Idlewild Presbyterian Church. They married in October of 1962 and were married for 44 years until Laurens died in 2006.
She was a homemaker and very active in volunteer work at LeBonheur Children's Hospital where she was also a lifetime member of the LeBonheur Club. Jean was active in her church, Second Presbyterian Church and worked at Campbell Clinic for 31 years as secretary to several doctors and then became the head of the transcription department.
Jean was an avid reader, traveling with Laurens, enjoyed spending her time with family and friends and especially adored her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Massey is survived by her children Elizabeth (Jim) Garrett of Collierville and Robert (Aimee) Massey of Memphis; her sister Mary Spencer Carroll of Jackson, Mississippi; grandchildren David (Emily) Lewis, Katelyn Lewis, Courtney (Mitchell) Kupiszewski, Lauren Massey, Lindsey Massey, Kate Massey and Charlie Massey; her five great-grandchildren Ella, Emma, and Madelyn Kupiszewski and Bennett and Henry Lewis, and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind special friends and loved ones in Greenwood, Mississippi in addition to the kind and compassionate caregivers from the last few years.
Family and friends will gather in the Chapel on Thursday, October 3 from 11:30 a.m. until funeral services begin at 1:00 p.m. all at Second Presbyterian Church, 4055 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38111.
