Jane was born August 19, 1936 in Modesto, CA to David and Eleanor Atherstone. Her childhood was spent in Modesto, Turlock and Vallejo, CA and she graduated from Vallejo High School. In 1957 she married Dudley Johnston and moved to several different states while raising their family. She and Dudley traveled to much of the U.S. and many countries abroad. They shared 63 years of marriage together before Dudley’s death in 2021.
Jane loved the Lord, gardening, entertaining, and taking care of others.
She is survived by a brother: Dan Atherstone, her three children: Jeanette (Doug, Jr.) Carpenter, Thomas Johnston, Matthew (Elizabeth) Johnston, six grandchildren: Douglas (Hannah) Carpenter III, Jared (Emily) Carpenter, Zachary (Kelli) Carpenter, Lori (Javan) McClung, Isabella Johnston, Maggie Johnston, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Lea Miller.
A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 2404 Kirby Rd., Memphis, TN 38119, on Saturday, November 11. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the service immediately following.
