He passionately stated he began reading God’s word at a very early age in life and repeated this until he transitioned on December 21, 2020. His faith and beliefs helped navigate him throughout his 80-year journey.
His journey took him down many avenues. He joined the United States Army on October 5, 1963 and completed his obligation on May 2, 1968. He married the love of his life the late Alice “Bunny Rabbit” Holliday and the union remained until she transitioned on December 12, 1991. To this union four kids where born.
He also was an exceptional educator with a giant presence in educating the youth in HVAC. He began teaching in the Memphis City School system May 28, 1973 until June 30, 2008. He was a mentor and second father to many of his students. There is no student whose life he touched, that does not remember him with enormous love, affection and respect.
The latest leg of his journey included being a grandfather and great-grandfather. He gave each of his great-grandchildren interesting and yet funny nicknames from “Lil Pee Pa”, “Lil 2019”, “Lil Fly By” and “George the 2020 Baby”.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory four daughters, Corry Davenport (Rodger), Shawanna R. Pye, Yolanda D. Greene all of Memphis, TN. Valerie Hearn (James) of Hannibal, MO; three sons, Earnest, Aldric (Wendy) and Salathiel all of Memphis, TN. One lovely sister Dorothy Anderton of NY; three brothers; Cliff (Bobbie), Bobby all of Memphis, TN. Bubber of Germany. Three grandsons; Brian, Salathiel and Xzarius; six granddaughters; Britne, Bakardi, Breanna, Shenna, Kai and JaAngela and 9 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Bowens; three sisters; Earnestine Alexander, Mildred Buck and Bertha Miller; two brothers, Floyd Holliday and Joe “Bo” Holliday, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday December 26, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to service time. Interment will follow at Memphis Memory Gardens.
