James Larry Conlee

James Larry Conlee, better known as “Breadie” or “Breadman” passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 8, 2014. He was 73 years old. The Lord took him home after playing 18 holes of golf with his friends. There is never a good time or way to go, but he left this earth playing the game he loved most. Larry was a self-made entrepreneur. With a start at Hart’s Bakery, he and his wife, Janice, then founded and operated Conlee Distribution Company for over 25 years before selling it to Brim’s Snack Foods. He most recently served as Area Regional Manager for Truco Company known for On the Border chips and salsa. Nearly every grocery store and restaurant in Memphis has been blessed with Breadie’s fun personality, great work ethic, and salesmanship for nearly five decades. Larry leaves his wife, Janice Mize Conlee of Oakland, daughter Lynn Conlee of Oakland, and son, Chris Conlee of Collierville. His son James “Bubba” Larry Conlee preceded him in death. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Tricia, Ashley, Mark, and Annika, as well as five great grandchildren. Larry was known as an excellent golfer. When his oldest son was killed in a car-train accident in 1981, Larry channeled his energy into helping establish the Bubba Conlee National Junior Golf Tournament. Thirty-four years later, the tournament is now ranked as one of the top junior golf events in the country. While the caliber of the field reaches impressive heights, Larry’s greatest passion was to host the families and players in an unprecedented way. A celebration of his life will be held at Highpoint Church at 6000 Briarcrest Avenue on Tuesday, August 12th at 6 pm. The family will receive friends at the church from 4:30-6:00pm.
