Jack Lindbergh "Poppy" Ammons passed away June 16, 2012. He was born in Henning, TN to Howard and Ruby Ammons, one of 4 brothers and 6 sisters. He moved to Memphis in 1943 and served in the Army during WWII. He started in 1949 with the Memphis Police Department and retired in 1980 as Captain, after 31 years of service. He was an avid University of Memphis Tigers fan and proud to be part of Tiger Nation. Anyone who knew Captain Jack knew his love for his St. Louis Cardinals and his never wavering support for his lifelong team. He leaves behind his sister, Flora Bell Proctor and his girls, step-daughter, Susan R. Crowder and his beloved granddaughter, who was his pride and joy, Katherine "Katie" R. Porter of Memphis. A service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Poplar Avenue. Visitation will be from 2-3 p.m. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. His kindness, generosity and unwavering love will never be forgotten and will be held in our hearts forever. A man of true character and a heart of gold. You will be missed forever.
