He was baptized at an early age at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He converted as an adult to Catholicism in 1985 and was an active member of St. Peter Church after having joined in 1992. There he served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Commentator and worked on the St. Martin De Porres Shrine & Institute.
George attended Carver High School and the University of Memphis. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management from Hamilton University.
George had more than 30 years in Human Resources including positions with Promus Hotels (now Hilton Hotels); Manpower, Incorporated; and, most recently, Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority where he served as Vice President of Human Resources. He received his PHR (Professional Human Resources Certification) in 1997, which is the second highest certification awarded to HR professionals.
An active member for more than 20 years of SHRM (Society for Human Resources Management), an international organization of HR professionals, George held several positions on the local SHRM – Memphis board. He was a founding and active member of the Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA) Human Resources Committee, which is a consortium of HR practitioners in Aviation.
George was among Memphis’ most prominent civic leaders. He is a Leadership Memphis graduate and previous Board Member. He served as Chair of the Board for the Memphis Child Advocacy Center, and was the 2015 recipient of the Nediva Award, which honors a volunteer who has made a passionate commitment and invaluable contributions toward the Center’s mission.
He currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Memphis College of Art. George previously served on the Board of Directors and as Board Chair for Friends For Life, Inc. He was an Advisory Board Member for the Memphis Film Forum; previously served on the board for the Alliance for the Blind and Visually Impaired; Victorian Village, Inc., The Playhouse on the Square; and the Saint Martin de Porres Shrine and Institute.
George’s personal philosophy is, “With any gifts, riches, skills or talents with which one is blessed, it is essential to give back to one’s community, by sharing in both financial ways and personal activity.”
Memorial services for George Mabon will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on 1720 Peabody Avenue, Memphis with Fr. Broderick Greer officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Memphis Child Advocacy Center, 1085 Poplar Avenue, Memphis. 38105.
He is survived by his lifetime partner Shawn Mathews; daughter Lauren Mabon-Price and son-in-law Dr. Anthony V. Price; mother Odessa D. Mabon; two sisters, Beverly Mabon-Hollingsworth and Rita Mabon-Patterson; brother Clinton Joe Mabon III; nephews; nieces; and a host of relatives and friends, including Aretha Gray-Bourne, a childhood sweetheart and lifelong friend.
