Francis D. "Don" Carpenter, Jr., 62, passed away on August 25, 2010. He was a veteran of the United States Marines. After graduation from Catholic High School in 1966, he joined the Marines and from 1967 thru 1968 served time as a tunnel rat and sniper scout in Vietnam. He recently retired from the Memphis Police Dept. where he worked as a civilian employee Crime Scene Tech. Throughout his 30 years with the MPD he continued his education which helped him perfect his craft. During his tenure he received numerous letters of recognition, letters of commendation and letters of thanks and appreciation from not only the Memphis Police Department, but also from the FBI, the TBI, the District Attorney General and the West Tennessee Judicial Violent Crimes Drug Task Force for his tireless dedication to the citizens of Memphis. He is survived by two brothers, Ed Carpenter and Ron Carpenter of Texas and a sister, Sharron Shylo of Memphis. A gathering in his memory will be Wednesday, September 1, between 4-8 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Poplar Avenue. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the American Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice may be made in his memory.
