Ernie Dewey Elder, Sr., 90, formally of Memphis, passed away May 3, 2018. He attended Mississippi State University, was a veteran of the United States Army, a Deacon and member of First Baptist Church of Memphis. He worked as a volunteer in many capacities with First Baptist Church including helping to paint the baptistery, assisting with his wife’s Sunday school class and helped with families seeking assistance from the Benevolence society of First Baptist Church. He encouraged people to do their best and truly had a servant’s heart. An avid gardener he enjoyed working outdoors and always had a yard to be proud of.
He was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Agnes Elder, his wife, Sarah Grace Cox Elder and eleven siblings.
He is survived by a son, Reverend Doctor Ernie D Elder, Jr. and his wife Angela.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday May 9, 2018 from 12:30 P.M. until service time. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M., all at First Baptist Church, 200 E. Parkway N, Memphis, TN 38112. Interment will follow at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens.
