Elizabeth “Bootsie” Hammett, age 81, passed away September 6, 2023, surrounded by family following a long battle with leukemia. She was born in Memphis, TN on October 12, 1941, and attended St. Thomas School.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, John Hammett; four children: Rebecca Austin (Terry), Alan Hammett, Mike Hammett, and Karen Hammett; three grandchildren: Dr. Jordan Austin, Jamie Austin, and Bryson Hammett of Memphis; and a daughter-in-law, Sharon.
She was adored by her siblings Bubba (Shirley), Poochie (Joe), Scoopy (Ken), Robert (Carol), Larry (Linda), Glenn, and Sissy (Denny) and sister-in-law Pat and many friends from the Botanic Garden Daylily Club.
She was a dedicated wife, mother, sister, and aunt. She had a special way of making all her nieces and nephews feel special and created lifetime memories for all. She loved cooking, gardening, sewing, and knitting. She made the best homemade ravioli in town and did her best to teach the family all the secrets to a perfect dough. She created the most memorable holidays with special food, perfect tablecloths for all occasions, and indoor and outdoor decorations galore. She was a great homemaker and valued carpooling her children to every practice and game and never seemed to miss a game or special event. She made her home a home for everyone with love and laughter for everyone.
A visitation for Elizabeth will be held Monday, September 11 from 9:00 AM until the funeral service at 10:00 AM, at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38119. Graveside committal service will immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery, 1663 Elvis Presley Blvd., Memphis, TN 38106.
