Eleanor Lorene Scott

Born in Memphis, Tennessee to Katherine Neudecker Kuehn and Ernest B. Kuehn Jr. on June 7, 1934.

She attended Lauderdale Kindergarten and Elementary School. While at school, she was a page in the Cotton Carnival parade. She graduated from South Side High School.

Eleanor attended the Memphis Academy of Art (later called the Memphis College of Art) while it was located in the Lee House and Fontaine House on Adams Street. She graduated in 1956 with a B.A. in Fine Art. Her graduating class of three included: Miriam Lee Mieher and Veda Reed.

She worked for the Memphis Parks Commission recreation department and taught classes at the Hobby Center. She also created artistic window displays for department stores including Lowensteins and Gerbers, assisted in creating Cotton Carnival parade floats as a volunteer, and hosted a live children's arts and crafts program on WKNO-TV.

Eleanor married Charles Edward Scott on November 7, 1959 at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Both met as students at Memphis Academy of Art and Charles graduated in 1960. They had one daughter, Keitha Lorene Scott.

Eleanor was then hired by Memphis Jewish Community Center as director for their fine arts department. She worked there for twelve years. While at the JCC, she developed innovative programs including the first arts festival for the city, which was called the Harvest Arts Festival. She also developed a fine motor skills program for special needs children, summer arts camp for fine arts and performing arts, art exhibits with local artists, and local group tours.

After leaving the JCC, she began working at Carriage Gallery with a focus on selling local artists’ works. She also arranged a trip to Virginia for Grand Illumination Events at Williamsburg along with a tour of James River plantations. During this time, she also taught art classes at a local Montessori school.

She later accepted the director position for Redeemer Lutheran Children’s Learning Center. She was director for seventeen years until its closing and continued to stay in touch with the parents and children over the years.

Although she was retired, she still taught private art classes for children and also taught summer art classes for children at the Memphis College of Art.

Through the years, she and her daughter traveled in the United States and made five trips to England, Ireland, and Scotland. Her hobbies included gardening, collecting art and books, reading, cooking gourmet foods, traveling, cultural events, and fine arts. Memberships included Theatre Memphis, Brooks Museum, Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis Botanic Garden, and Altrusa International.

She is survived by her daughter Keitha Lorene Scott, her sister Mary Katherine Hume, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 15, at 12:00 Noon, at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN with her celebration of life service immediately following at 1:00 PM.

Charitable donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Metal Museum, Memphis Botanic Gardens, or Baptist Reynolds Hospice House.

Burial will take place immediately following the service at Memorial Park Cemetery, for family only.
